Good day, It is pass monday and I am finally getting to write my last blog to you this after finishing the paper work for the end of the year.
We will be having free hot dogs and ice cream on Wed., compliments of our local Credit Union.
Fri. we will be selling Fries for lunch to raise money for the breakfast program of next year.
The children will be allowed each an order with the possibility of two ,supplies depending.
Children will be bring lots of items home, if they have too much paper or crayons I am sure the l near by kindergarden or YMCA or Salvation Army can use them.
We are going to work a little, and have fun for the next three days.
I have given your child a map to my cottage so if you are in the area, please drop in.
These few months with your children have been just a delight.I love the age these children are at. Still very innocent and so eager and full of life.
There is no more homework as such but it will be in your hands for the summer. I would suggest that you have a reading time with your child for the summer. There are so many times and places in the summer for your child to learn, use them and have fun.
Have a great Summer.bye!

Good evening. I have just come home from the school, as yoou well know there are not enough hours in the day.
This week at Greenfield:

In between that we are finishing the work we have started and doing some work that will be placed in a folder for the next year's teacher . We will not have many idle moments.

Monday, June 7, 2010

We are counting the days. In our gathering circle each morning I could give them a difficult math question . How many days left of school? 175-143=??. now it is getting too easy.
We are concluding our work in between the activities that are going on:
Last Friday we saw a lot of talent from our class in the talent show of grades 1&2.
This Friday we will be enjoying the talent show of Grades 3,4,5 and 6. No pressure this week.
On Thurs: The choir is going to the Wedgewood manor, walking via the Trail.

We are into an ant farm this week in science and Language arts.
We are into writing our good copy of "My Perfect Summer Day"
In Math we are continuing to perfect our speed in addition and subtraction of numbers 1-20.

Sunday, May 30, 2010

It is the end of May and the students are restless. Last week the class talked about where we are comfortable to do our reading or to do pleasure reading. Many places were mentioned. For the month of June we are allowing the children to bring in their favorite cushion, soft chair, pillow or foam mat so they can be more comfortable while reading in class. It is very important that the students learn to enjoy reading. During the summer we will be encouraging them to read out loud, read silently or better yet the parents can read to them( French or English).
In Science and Language Arts we are still on insects. We made an ant farm and we will see tomorrow if they survived the weekend. They were still going strong on Sat.
Math is more challenging as we are subtracting 52-18=____. this is still a challenge for many but we are advancing along slowly.
Dictée is the word Liste 25 la ville, une bulle, la colle,il appelle il flotte,la Terre, une patte, il arrive.
There are still freezes being sold for $.50 each. Many children have money for a freeze on Monday, you may wish to check with them about the other days. They will be sold until the supply is gone.
We read a story about SOUP last Friday and many students said they had made some with a adult before. If it is something you do make your child can bring a bowl to school with the recipe to share with the class and I will heat it up for them. Hopefully before the end of the year we can make a pot for the class.
Monday morning we are going to a bike safety lecture put on by the police. Your child was told he or she could bring their helmets to school to get them properly fitted.
Please check the school calendar and the notes from the principal as there are a lot of activities for the month of June.

Monday, May 24, 2010

What a great day for a holiday. I hope you were able to enjoy the family time.
In Language Arts we are working on spring and summer readings. Most of these are about what you see and do in the two seasons. It goes along with our science where we are going to try and create a ant colony in a fish bowl.I am sure you will hear if we are successful or not. We are learning about insect and we will be doing some outside observations and collections.
In Math we are subtracting and this week we are starting to borrow. We have a few math games that we play which most students enjoy.
The Dictée for this week is lesson 24. The words are: un arbre,le jardin, fort, il tourne,la mer, le mur,il parle, une formi. .
We are also going to be doing words that grade two students should know so look each day for new spelling words. They will be asked 5 words each day and they only have to learn the ones they had trouble with.
On Tues. some students are going to have a field trip to Elm Street school.
The quick changes in temperature has some students being very cold on outside recesses. Please still insist on sweaters in their school bags.
Have a great week

Here it is -another new week May 17,2010.
The grade two class is active and well.
In language arts we finished the life cycle of the butterfly.Last Friday and today the students took a familiar book and wrote a different ending to the story. It showed that they are very creative. We will continue to expand their creativity as we will have a specialist visit our class to help with writing stories . This will continue for a few weeks.
In math we are finishing graphs. We will be concentrating on subtracting and adding. They love the flash cards we use when we are in line going out or to another class.
Dictee- The words for the week are ones that pertain to the outside topic we are in language. The sheet was stapled to the students agenda. They are;
la pelouse- lawn
un insecte-insect
une fourmi-ant
la nature-nature
un papillon- butterfly
un nid-nest
une abeille-bee
une mouche-fly
un grenouille- frog

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Welcome, We are in May and the days are getting nicer so it is difficult to keep attention on school work as I am sure you have noticed in trying to do homework.
In language arts we are starting a new unit - the world around us, This includes insects, and the world outdoors. Students need to read each night to retain their reading level. Please encourage it.
In Math we are still on graphs and including addition and subtraction. Doing little quizzes in subtraction each day shows that some students still need a lot of work to do take-aways from 1-20. Please evaluate them occassionally. Some of their work will be going home at the end of the week.
Science is in with our language arts, looking at the cycle of the butterfly, frog and the homes of the ant.
Spelling is unit 23 using the GN sound.,
The students have taken home book orders that I would like to order next week-end May 21st. Have a nice week.

Monday, May 3, 2010

We are already in the month of May.I can see progress in the reading and math. It has been brought up at the staff meetings that items brought to school should be for the outside playground, such as ball gloves, skipping ropes etc. We are not responsible for any items brought to school for play ,this includes ipods.DS or any other items.
This is a short week with the students having Friday off, so teachers can attend a Federation business day. Wed. afternoon we will be attending the play at the Jubilee. I could use an extra parent or two.
The liste 23 is our new words. They will be tested on these next Friday May15. They will be given extra words so check their agendas.
We are finishing the unit on Water this week in our Language Arts.
We are working with graphs and subtraction in Math.
I hope you enjoy the booklet the students have done on an animal of the water.
Thank you for taking the time to read to your child and signing their agenda and carnet the lecture booklets.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Homework is being checked each morning. Please ensure that your child has written the books he has read in his booklet"Carnet de Lecture" .
Language Arts : This week we are working on writing little booklets about information on animals of the water.
Math:Fast math is being done each day, 5 minutes on either addition or subtraction. This helps to reinforce the simple math equations to 20. We are also starting a section on graphs.
We are still doing centers each morning.
The next month is very important to the success of each child. With the evenings being so bright please try to help them get a good night sleep. I do know sometimes it is difficult.

We are beginning a duo-tang on grammar, covering all aspects from capital letters to agreeing verbs and adjectives with the noun. You can empasize these items in their work.
We have started centers where the students work with a partner for 20 min. on math, language aspects or reading. This gives them a chance to get away from their desks as well as learn to work with people other than their friends.
Scholastic orders are to be in by Monday April 19.
On Friday April 16 we are wearing team shirts, hats etc for muscular dystrophy . The students will also have a chance to have a pledge sheet for HOP-A-THON next week. More information to come. Look at the notes on Greenfield Elementary's site.

Happy Easter ! Welcome spring. It certainly seems to be here. The children will be excited to see the fine weather but please be aware there will still be cold days where they'll need warm jackets.
This week we are at classes for 3 days only , so we have to achieve a lot in that time. They will find their desks rearranged when they enter tomorrow morning so I have alloted 20 min. to organize their seat.

Chocolate bunnies

Good evening, Thursday I spoke to the class about my allergy to chocolate. I asked them to be aware of the amount of chocolate they bring to school for the next week . The strong smell from a large amount of chocolate will make me cough and I will get a raspy voice . At this point I will know to leave the classroom. This allergy is more annoyance that anything else. The normal amount of chocolate in lunches doesn't bother me at all. Iapprreciate their and your concern about this issue.

Monday, March 29, 2010

This evening the students took home some new reading books and a record sheet . Some students informed me that they had a duo-tang at home with sheet to record their reading. The books, duo-tang and agenda should be going back and forth from home to school daily. They have been given a black case to protect their books from other items in their school bag.
The list of spelling words this week is Liste 20.We will be having our word test on Thursday.
I hope Easter is wonderful to all.

Friday, March 26, 2010

Hi, My name is Edith Hogan. As of March 22nd I became your son or daughters teacher filling in for Mrs. MacLeod. Mrs. MacLeod is now the proud mom of a baby boy Pacey, born on March 17.

The students have had a very good start to the year and we hope to continue this process to the end.

To maintain and improve reading and comprehension skills, the students will be taking home reading books daily and recording what they read. The books will be the same for the week to improve their fluency. They should always be in their school bags as they also read them in class.

In Language Arts, we are enjoying a space unit that combines science as well. This will be completed at Easter.

Our math program is centered around determining the consistency of numbers (28=2 tens and 8 ones), also addition with carrying and subtraction with borrowing. This is their biggest challenge in math for Grade 2. Practicing their addition and subtraction facts from 1-20 will help assure their success.

Agenda will be going home nightly(except week-ends). Your attention and signature on these will emphasize that homework is important. The blog will be updated each Monday.

Tuesday, March 9th

First of all, I would like to welcome Mme Edith Hogan to our class! We are so happy that she will be working with us for the rest of the year! Also, a big thank-you to everyone for re-arranging your schedules to meet for parent-teacher interviews. If we did not get a chance to meet over the past few weeks, or yesterday, there is a note in your child's agenda to arrange a time later this week. There is also a very important information sheet (green) regarding our visit to the Credit Union Place this Friday. Please fill out the form and send it back to school asap. I am also still looking for as many parents as possible who would like to join us for skating, swimming, and/or bowling. Instead of being responsible for a certain group of children....teachers and parents will have a certain area to supervise, and will be responsible for any kids in that particular area (regardless of class/grade). Thank-you for your help! We have a busy week ahead of us, with a lot of work to wrap-up and with French week activities! I will be in touch later this week!

Wednesday, February 24th

Just a reminder that report cards will be sent home next week (Tuesday, the 2nd), and parent-teacher interviews will be held the evening of March 4th (Thursday), and all day Friday. If you are interested in a certain time, please let me know before the end of the week. Your interview time will be sent home this Friday.

Even though there was a spelling quiz on Monday, we will go ahead with our spelling quiz this Friday. We are working on -ui words!

In math this week, we are working on addition/subtraction of tens (with double digit numbers....12 + 10, 12+80, 57-30 etc...) Please continue practicing math facts (addition/subtraction up to 20) at home, since many students still need a lot of practice with their mental math. I am hoping to make up a little math envelope to send home by the end of next week to practice math facts at home.

Scholastic book catalogues for March were sent home yesterday. If interested, please send in your order by next Friday, March 5th.

This Friday, the school will be having a mini-Olympics celebration, where each class will be representing a certain country. Our class has been assigned to Sweden. We will be making a flag, and having "opening ceremonies" in the gym, so if possible, your child is asked to wear blue and/or yellow to school on Friday.

I think that's all for now.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to request a certain interview time, please e-mail me at lsmacleod@edu.pe.ca

Thanks!

Thursday, February 18th!

Thank-you for all of the nice surprises this week...from flowers, to fortune cookies for the class! Everyone has been working together to make this busy week a great one for the staff and students. The Chinese food was a hit!

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school. Your child is more than welcome to come to school dressed how he/she thinks they will look when they are 100 years old. Students are also invited to bring a collection of 100 items, or anything related to the number 100 to school for a show and tell tomorrow.

Due to the short school week, tomorrow's spelling quiz will take place on Monday.

We are now working our the good copies of our stories. This process has taken us quite a bit longer than expected. I'm hoping to have stories completed by the end of next week!

This week, we have also started a theme on Space with our French Language Arts program. This should be a fun one, with a lot of art, reading, and writing activities!

A quick reminder that the 2nd Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, March 2nd, and Parent-teacher interviews will be held on Thursday evening and all day Friday, March 4th and 5th. If you have a preferred day/time, please write me a quick note in your child's agenda by Wednesday, Feb 24th. Thanks! See you soon!

Monday, February 8th

We have a busy week ahead of us! On Friday, we will be celebrating the beginning of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, National Flag Day (with an assembly in the gym), and Valentine's Day. This week, we have also begun our new math unit "Adding and Subtracting up to 100". This unit will include adding by 10, addition/subtraction of double-digit numbers, subtracting by 10, and solving word problems using strategies learned in class. In science, we are talking about water in its three forms (liquid, solid, and gas).

Next week, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school (on Wednesday) and the Chinese New Year. For the 100th day of school, your child is more than welcome to come to school dressed how he/she thinks they will look when they turn 100 years old! On Thurday, February 18th, we will be ordering Chinese Food for Grades 1 and 2 at a cost of 3$/student. A letter will be sent home this week with more information.

I have five weeks left with the class until my maternity leave begins (on March Break). I still do not know who will be my replacement. Over the next few weeks, we will be doing our best here at school to make this an easy transition for everyone involved! If anyone is interested in having an early parent-teacher interview after school, please write me a quick note and we can set up a time to meet at your convenience.

Thanks!

Lisa

Monday, February 1st!

We have a very busy few weeks ahead of us...starting next week with the beginning of the Olympics, our Valentine's Day celebation, our Chinese New Year celebration (more details to come), and the 100th Day of School! We will be very busy, but have a lot of work to do before we can celebrate.

We are continuing to work on cursive writing, our science experiments, writing our own stories (we are almost finished our revisions and are soon ready to start writing our good copies), and we will be finishing up measurements in Math this week.

There will be a spelling quiz on Friday (eu/eur). Scholastic Book orders are also due this Friday. Captain Sub orders were due tomorrow, but because of the change in PD days, we will be accepting orders early Wednesday morning as well.

In computer class today, we played a few math and alphabet games at the link below. It was a hit!

http://webinstit.net/jeux/jeux_recap.htm

That's all for now.

Have a great day!

Important notice!

An small orange information slip was sent home today with information regarding possible school closures tomorrow. In case of bad weather, if classes are cancelled tomorrow, the PD day scheduled for this Monday, February 1st will be pushed until Tuesday, February 2nd (due to the exams taking place at other schools). So, if there is no school tomorrow, there will be classes as usual on Monday, and no classes on Tuesday. If we are here tomorrow (and the way things have been going this winter, this "storm" may very well pass us by) the PD will go ahead as scheduled for Monday and there will be no classes for students (as previously scheduled).

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at lsmacleod@edu.pe.ca and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Monday, January 25th

Happy Monday!

We had a great day today...with library, gym, and it was our first day of cursive writing! We did not begin any letters yet, we are simply practicing the basics of cursive writing....how to keep our pencil on the page, and how to write smoothly and evenly. Please remind your child that cursive writing takes a lot of time and practice, and patience! We wrote our names in cursive writing as best we could, so that we can compare how we will be able to write in a month's time, to see all of our great progress!

Two new reading books, and a library book should be coming home today. Spelling quizzes are in the agenda...instead of a bonus, they had to underline the hard g in blue, and the soft g in red. This week's spelling list consists of words with the letter s that sounds like a z. We are also practicing how to spell numbers 6-10 in our math journals (six, sept, huit, neuf, and dix).

We are at the revising/correcting stage for our stories, and are practicing how to underline words that we think are spelled incorrectly. We are learning how to find the correct spelling (by looking around the class, looking in a dictionnary, asking a friend...etc.). We are also making sure that all of our sentences have capital letters (which we trace with a red pencil) and punctuation marks (which we trace in blue).

We are still making a new flag every day (except today because we ran out of time) to celebrate the many countries that will be participating in the Vancouver 2010 olympics!

Please return food/milk orders to the school by this Thursday.

That's all for now!

Speaking English....

This week, I started to be more strict with consequences when I hear anyone in class speaking English. This is the second half of Grade 2, and students should all be speaking French at all times right now. If I hear students speaking to eachother in English (I have to hear a sentence or more...when they don't know that I am listening), they will be staying in for the following little recess. I will not be keeping anyone in during our luch recess. This being said....there are a few little ones in class who would like to stay in at recess and are trying to speak in English. I have spoken to these people individually to let them know that I am "on to them", and realise what they are trying to do. So far, so good. Just thought I would let you know, in case you heard that your child had to stay in! Thanks for your support!

Lisa

Tuesday, January 19th

We are now working on Spelling List 12 (g dur and g doux....g dur makes the sound ggg, and g doux makes the sound jjjj). Friday's spelling quizzes have been sent home today as well. For the bonus, I dictated one sentence, and your child had to use any word from our spelling list to make up any sentence on his/her own! We are still working hard on capital letters and periods at the end, but a lot of progress is being made in class with regards to our writing. We will also begin cursive writing shortly!

A pink slip "Greenfielf Students Helping Haiti" was sent home today. There will be a cookie sale, and a hat day this Friday (for 1$). Please pre-order cookies by Thursday...they are 25 cents each, and I believe that they are all chocolate chip.

We have begun working on flags from around the world, in connection with the olympics. We will be making flags from various countries...they are fascinated by all of this! What a fun theme!

In preparation for the school's science fair in March (for the older grades), we will be completing a few science projects of our own in class. I will bring in the materials for at least one science project per week. For the next few weeks, we will be experimenting with ice and snow. Time permitting, everyone in the class will work on a science fair project at the end of February, early March....so just a heads up in case your child is coming home with ideas. This is just an idea...more details to follow if there is enough interest from the class.

In math, we are continuing to work with the calendar, and have begun working with rulers, estimating, and measuring various objects! They are loving the hands-on math!

On a personal note, we have moved homes, and for the time-being have no phone or internet connection at home. If you need to reach me, please call, or leave a message at the office during school hours, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank-you for your patience!

I think that's all for now,

I'll be in touch!

Bonne annee!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great break with your family and friends. We are slowly getting back into routine (everyone seems to be a bit tired today...which is to be expected). Here are a few updates for this week:

- Please remember to send indoor shoes back to school

- We are working on List 10 for our spelling words (there are 8 spelling words this week instead of the usual 6, but we practiced a little bit before Christmas as well)

- In Math, we have begun a unit on Measurement. We will be working on time (telling time on the hour and half-hour), studying the calendar (days of the week and months of the year), and estimating, measuring, and comparing the lengths and weights of various objects. This month, we are also practicing spelling our numbers from 0-20. We will focus on one number per day.

- Scholastic order forms for January were sent home today. Orders are due by next Friday, Jan. 15th.

- New reading books will be sent home tomorrow. Tonight's homework is to brainstorm ideas for a book that your child will be writing, beginning this week. Please ask your child to think about the kind of book (fiction, non-fiction) and the characters that he/she would like to write about.

Here are a few upcoming activities at the J.-Henri-Blanchard Public Library

Reading Club for School-aged children, Saturday January 9th at 10:30 a.m. Also, Saturday, February 6th at 10:30 a.m. Each session will last approximately 1/2 hour and will consist of a short literary discussion followed by a few activities.

Singing and Story-telling activities, January 27th, from 6:00p.m.-6:30 p.m. (International Day of Family Literacy). Families are invited to come listen to stories and participate in a sing-song of popular winter songs. Active participation is highly encouraged!

For more information/registration, please contact Ecole-Sur-Mer.

That's all for now! I'll be in touch!
